The species grows to about 22 cm and has a deep, laterally compressed, dark silvery body with large scales. It lives pelagically near the edge of the continental shelf in the open ocean and probably spawns year-round. As a predator it feeds on small zooplankton, small fishes and crustaceans. Pomfrets are powerful swimmers of open water. The lesser bream is sometimes marketed fresh and is harmless to humans.
