Description
The royal gramma (Gramma loreto) is a small, strikingly coloured reef fish of the family Grammatidae from the Caribbean. The front half of the body is bright purple to magenta and the rear half vivid yellow, an unmistakable combination that makes the species a favourite marine aquarium fish. It reaches only about 8 cm and stays in caves and under ledges, where it often swims with its belly toward the ceiling, thus appearing to hang upside down. It feeds partly on ectoparasites of other fishes and on plankton. The male builds and guards a nest of algae.
