Description

The galjoen is a coastal fish occurring along the coast of southern Africa and is the national fish symbol of South Africa. The species grows to about 80 cm and has a deep, powerful, dark body with strong scales, well suited to the turbulent surf. As a grazer it lives in the surf zone around rocks and feeds on red algae, mussels and small invertebrates. It is a popular sport and food fish. The IUCN assesses the species as Least Concern (LC).
