Description
The smoothhead catfish is an air-breathing catfish (Clariidae) from fresh and brackish water of West Africa. The species grows to about 32 cm and has an elongate, dark, eel-like body with a flattened head, four pairs of barbels and long dorsal and anal fins. Thanks to an accessory breathing organ it tolerates oxygen-poor water and short droughts. As a nocturnal omnivore it searches the bottom for invertebrates, small fish and plant material. The fish is harmless to humans.
