Description
The blind electric ray is an electric ray (Narkidae) from deeper coastal waters around New Zealand. The species grows to about 45 cm and has a round, flattened body disc with strongly reduced eyes hidden beneath the skin, hence 'blind'. In its pectoral fins it carries electric organs with which it can deliver a strong shock to stun prey and defend itself. As a bottom-dweller it lives on sand and mud bottoms. Do not touch; the shock is powerful.
