Description

The Commander skate is a deepsea skate (Arhynchobatidae) of the continental slope in the deep northwest Pacific. The species grows to about 60 cm and has a flat, diamond-shaped disc with a soft snout and a prickly back and tail. As a bottom-dweller of the cold deep water it lies on sand and mud and searches for crustaceans, molluscs and bottom fish. It reproduces with egg cases ('mermaid's purses'). The fish is harmless to humans.
